How do I enroll a student at Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School?

The typical enrollment process differs for grade school children and children entering our preschool program.

Kindergarten to Grade 8: To enroll a child in grade school, first a meeting between the family and our admission counselor is scheduled. This is followed by an interview with the school principal. Student records, including recent grade cards and standardized test scores should be brought along. If, after the interview, you wish to enroll your child, you will need to complete the application for enrollment. Upon receiving the application, the principal may contact either the child’s previous teacher or principal. If no problems or concerns are evident, Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School will accept your child for enrollment and you can complete the remaining paperwork and pay the appropriate fees. SBLS reserves the right to do some basic testing to determine the appropriate classroom and grade level placements for a new student if deemed necessary by the school.

Preschool: To enroll a preschool student who fits the basic age requirements, fill out the application and pay the registration fee. Call the school office for further details.

Who will teach my child?

Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School has made a commitment to recruiting the highest quality teachers to minister to our students. Of course this means trained, state-certified teachers. But more importantly, it means teachers committed to Christian education, dedicated to serving children and families and actively living their Christian faith. Most of our teachers have been trained specifically to teach in a Lutheran Christian school. We call this process “synodical training.”

What is the cost?

Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School is supported in large part through the giving of members of Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran Church. We charge tuition in an attempt to recoup some of the costs of educating children. The amount of tuition varies based on the class the child attends and the family’s relationship to our Church. All families are charged a registration fee that covers the cost of books and other supplies which are considered part the day-to-day operations cost. Some financial aide is available. Applications are available to families after they enroll their child. Please note: For preschool students, all families pay the full tuition regardless of their membership status.

When does registration for the next school year start?

Registration officially opens at the annual open house, typically in late January or early February. New applications are accepted from that time through the first day of school in August. However, families with children previously enrolled and children of members of our congregation have enrollment priority until the first of April.

Why should I consider Suburban Bethlehem Lutheran School when I can send my child to the public school for free?

Each family needs to determine what they value. At SBLS, we value Christian education. At SBLS, we believe we can provide a high quality education for your child. Our students generally score substantially above average on national achievement tests. We can also provide some things not available in public education. We pray together. We have chapel services. We have faculty and staff members that are committed to Christ and who seek to work together in harmony and with a common purpose. We endeavor to prepare children for a life of service to God and to their fellow man and not just to live for self. Most of all, on a daily basis, we strive to teach each child that he or she is known and loved by God, that he or she is precious to Him, and that in Jesus Christ he or she has a Savior who has forgiven all sins and provides eternal life.

What about an interscholastic sports program?

For girls in grades 5 through 8 we offer soccer, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, and track. For boys in grades 5 through 8 we offer soccer, basketball, and track. We believe that sports are an avenue for teaching important Christian life lessons about effort, responsibility, teamwork and honor.
